Grandpa Frank's Whiskey Sour Christmas Slush
A Frozen Cocktail at the Ready for Guests All Through the Holidays
Grandpa Frank was famous for his Whiskey Sour “slush.” He made it every year at Christmastime. He loved batching it up and keeping it in the freezer for when people stopped by.
I hadn’t had his slush in decades, so I decided to dig it up this year. What I found was more than a written recipe. My stepfather had VHS video (remember that??!?) of Grandpa sharing his recipe on camera. PRICELESS!!! Watch the video here (swipe right once).
Grandpa was a hearty, happy man who loved Christmas. He lived for making others feel special and good. The glasses here are my grandparents’ original glasses. They bought them for a dollar each at Arby’s in the early 80s. I now pull them out this time of year.
The frozen Whiskey Sour recipe is quite simple. Normally, I would update this kind of recipe with more modern ingredients, but the frozen orange juice and lemonade concentrate here is just perfect as is. I usually pour more whiskey on top before adding a bourbon soaked cherry and some rosemary before serving. I sometimes top it off with prosecco, too.
Cheers, y’all!
Chadwick’s Checklist
What you need to know before you cook.
- Any type of blender will do. I prefer a Vitamix because it's more powerful.
- Keep the concentrates fully frozen before using
- My family uses Seagram's 7 for the whiskey, but any brand of choice works
- Make 3-4 batches at once and keep in an air-tight container in the freezer
Serves: 4 Prep Time: 5 minutes Active Time: 5 minutes
Ingredients
1 12-ounce can frozen orange juice concentrate
1 12-ounce can frozen lemonade concentrate
1 tablespoon granulated sugar
4½ ounces whiskey
2-3 cups ice
Few sprigs fresh rosemary
Brandied cherries
Directions
Add the orange juice and lemonade concentrates, sugar and whiskey to a blender. Fill the rest of the blender with the ice. Blend well until “slushy.”
Serve in highball or wine glasses. Top off with more whiskey if desired. Garnish with a rosemary sprig and a cherry. Serve immediately.
Chadwick’s Changeups
Switch things up. Have some fun! Do more.
- Blend in a couple handfuls of frozen cranberries
- Instead of orange juice concentrate, try blackberry with the lemonade
- Bourbon works well with this drink, too
